@samantha_rae_billing You like your rainy season ? I’m hating mine 😭😭 haha hope all is well!

If I could point to one scholar whose work has been most conceptually important to my research, my teaching, and my feminism, it would be Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw. Originator of Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory, Professor Crenshaw’s work provides theory which has changed forever the way I think about gender and identity politics. It was very exciting on Tuesday this week to be one of many people listening to Professor Crenshaw speak at the University of Edinburgh (and to have made it off the waiting list of hundreds!) But an academic highlight happened on Wednesday, when halfway through the workshop on Decolonising Feminist Knowledge which our own small research group had organised, Professor Crenshaw slipped into the room unannounced to attend the afternoon sessions. Best of all was when she also took the time to attend our intimate post-event reception, and engage in really insightful one-to-one conversation with this special group of feminist scholars. In the world of celebrity feminism, it’s hard to imagine a more gracious or influential role model.

This is such a treasured photograph for me, taken from that evening reception. Professor Crenshaw is pictured right of centre, alongside many of my own feminist mentors, colleagues, and friends, as well as fellow panelists and chairs from the day, including Professor Rukmini Sen, Dr Radhika Govinda, Professor Fiona Mackay, Dr Kanchana Ruwanpura, Professor Lynn Jamieson, Dr Amelie Le Renard, Janine Francois, Kamya Choudhary, Cat Wayland, Marta Kowalewska, Shubhi Sharma, Sarah Golightly, Dr Órla Murray, Dr Lisa Kalayji, and others included here.

This is the grad school bucket list day I didn’t even know I could wish for, and I’ll be reliving it for weeks to come.

@fabianonfpena 🔥🔥🔥

Right now my #PhD project isn't that pretty, so I'm going back to my #masters again for #ThowbackThursday. Do you know what polarized light is?

Normally white light is a mixture of all possible (visible) frequencies and is vibrating in all possible directions. This is illustrated in the light source with many different double-ended vectors. Simply by introducing a physical barrier such as a series of vertical slits, we can block all the light except that which is vibrating in the same direction of the slit. This is called polarization, in which all the light is vibrating in a single (vertical) plane.

This alone has all sorts of useful applications. Most of the light coming off water is polarized horizontally. So by wearing glasses with vertical slits we can block all the light coming from glare reflected from the water. The same principle applies to 3D movies, in which frames of the movie are polarized in two opposite directions. Then your 3D glasses filter out the opposite polarization for each eye, which creates the illusion of depth perception.

We exploit the concept of crossed polarizers to study liquid crystals crystals (LCs). The stacking pattern of the crystals can bend light. So light that is already vertically polarized can be rotated. Now that it is rotated, it has both vertical and horizontal components. The horizontal component will pass through the second polarizer and we will see that light as an image. Under crossed polarizers, an LC should 1) flow, and 2) allow light to pass through when it is art certain orientations.

Finally, I love how the stacking patterns of the material can be seen at larger length scales. In this case the individual molecules are arranged in a hexagonal pattern with six-fold symmetry - and that same pattern can be seen in the formation of the much larger macromolecule!

To me #symmetry is a sign of the often hidden rules of physics and mathematics.

Even if we used everyday to celebrate a different life form we wouldn’t cover very much of the Earth’s Biodiversity! But some species are in more trouble than others so (in the USA) is World Turtle Day to help ensure the survival of the world’s turtles / tortoise species. Turtles and tortoises are at a much higher risk of extinction than many other vertebrates due to the long term exploitation of these species for their shells and meat. I highly recommend taking a trip to the reef to see the turtles before it’s too late! .

This experiment might be a tale as old as time but it almost every time catches childrens’ curiousity and interest. They just WANT to do it themselves. See how their hair stands apart. Laugh at each other. Maybe even try to put the balloon up to the ceiling or the wall. I know that I always did. And still do, as a matter of fact. But what exactly is happening when I rub the balloon over my head? Sometimes I can even hear a crackling, like electricity.
And it’s something like that. The phenomenon is called static electricity and it’s electrons moving somewhat freely in the material. When a rubber balloon is rubbed against human hair, electrons are transferred from the hair to the balloon, giving the balloon a negative charge, and leaving the hair with a positive charge. The hair is attracted to the balloon, because the materials have opposite charges. When the balloon is pulled away from the hair, the positive charge of the hair makes the hair stand out, because the positive charge on the individual hairs causes each hair to repel the other hairs. That’s why you end up looking a little like Albert Einstein.

“Ganya, the prince is ill…” When I first read this sentence, it sunk in, pebbling all the way to the bottom. Sinking. Bleeding into the caged ribs of memory. This script has been one of those never-forgot phrases, those that unapologetically hook in, shine forward with me. I encountered it on a linguistics midterm—and, bewitched as I was, I thought it was a direct quote from the novel, The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Or, perhaps, an alternate (speculative) rendering of that full-bodied narrative text turned and penned by another direction of the writer’s will. Imaginings less spoken. Some of these unwritten possibilities still being scratched, forever, and yet still there—as an echo and a tidal deviation in the long act of scribing down various untaken plot trees. So, it rings, and so it is in my thoughts. There, present. This living impulse has become a centering force for an epigraph consciousness. A silent meditation into the kernel of what I think may be my first prose novel (a medium, I admit, I am less practiced in). I think of it, from time to time—and of this unwritten novel, a novel to be. The Lost Prince of Corinth. As I utter the novel’s title in secret and in the reposed nightlife of my thoughts. Wondering, wondering about the light of swirling madness is. Its madness, prolific and pertinent, as I contemplate… “Ganya, the prince is ill…”

Work smarter not harder.
.
The last year of your PhD is a very busy time. In fact most of your PhD will be quite a busy time. But if you employ good time management skills your PhD doesn’t need to take over your entire life! .
.
& even if you’re not a PhD student I’m sure you are also very busy and sometimes feel like there’s not enough time in the day to get everything done.
.
.
I’m a firm believer that on most days you should be able to get all your work for your PhD done in a reasonable number of hours. I typically work a 9 hour work day and I honestly don’t need any more than that unless I’m doing a time course or have a particularly big day. .
.
I wake up early, have some time to myself to plan my day, to go work, get the work done and then have hours between when work ends and I go to sleep to have down time, to catch up with people and to do any other kind of work I may need to do that isn’t related to my PhD. .
.
I find it interesting that some people brag about working 14 hour days. Why would you do that if you can work half that and get the same output? .
.
But how do you manage your time effectively? Part of it comes with practice. Over time you will become more efficient and able to get things done in less time, but something you can actually do is use a schedule. For a week write down everything you do and when somewhere and then highlight the spaces where you are not doing anything in particular- this is time you could be doing other things. .
.
If you have experiments with incubations, you could be making figures in the incubation time, or reading or writing. .
.
If you have a really long commute to work, can you use that time to get things done? .
.
Like I said at the start of this post, it’s also about working smarter not harder. If you plan out your experiments in advance and have everything planned it’s more likely you will waste less time in the long run. .
.
You could spend 10 minutes at the start of your day making a plan for the day ahead & most importantly IMO, work out when YOU work best! Are you better at working early in the morning, do the most important things in that time! .
.
Any other suggestions? Comment below!

Something scientists often have to do is juggle lab work along with writing or preparing for an upcoming presentation. If you’re anything like me, you may find it difficult to switch between these tasks every few hours and be able to concentrate! .
.
Here’s a tip from me to make things a bit easier for yourself when these things come around: make figures and write your figure captions as you go! .
.
This will save you time when it comes to talks or writing! If you have already made the figure you can put it straight in whatever you are writing or easily fit it in to your presentation slides or poster (perhaps with some changes due to formatting). And if you have written your figure legends before you start writing your thesis or your next manuscript I guarantee it will be easier to remember what that experiment meant and what it tells you so that writing your results should be a piece of cake (or at least a little bit easier ) .
.
Even if its a figure with multiple panels this can be useful because you can put boxes in the spots where you need an extra graph or image or whatever else & this will serve as a reminder of the experiments perhaps you need to focus on to get those figures coming together. .
.
I also feel like this is one of those activities that makes you feel like you’re getting somewhere and you’re being productive. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how much work you have done. But if you have made your figures you can have a look at them and feel good about the awesome work you have produced! So each time I finish up my experiments I take the time to sit down and make them into a figure :) .
.
Leave a comment saying whether you do this or not and whether you think it is a good idea?

Embracing the cell culture 🧫 life with open arms right now Knocking things out, putting things in, adding cytokines, checking expression! It’s a full time job in itself looking after my mammalian cell lines and performing the experiments. The last year of my PhD may as well be sponsored by @gibcocellculture .
.
During the last 2 years of my PhD I’ve had the worst luck with my cell cultures either being killed, lost, mixed together by accident (doh!) and just the general fun of not being able to knock out some genes ya know the deal
.
.
But despite all this, I somehow find doing cell experiments quite relaxing. I have been working with mammalian cells for many years now and I think it’s just become second nature to me. .
.
Plus I enjoy the peace of the tissue culture room and looking at my little babies down the microscope. For people who don’t work with cell lines, it’s akin to looking after plants - you think they’re your little kids and you love them but can’t work out why sometimes they just die

Does anybody else feel like this? Do you love it or hate it??

Hands up if you’re a coffee fiend ‍️ I LOOOOVEEEE coffee. But the downside to this is that if I don’t have my morning coffee I get really terrible headaches! But does this mean I’m addicted to coffee? Keep reading to learn more: .
.
To start off let’s talk about caffeine, the actual drug in coffee which is a stimulant. Caffeine enters our brain and blocks adenosine receptors which are involved in “dulling” brain activity. By blocking these receptors we feel an increase in alterness, concentration and even euphoria!
.
.
There’s a lot of people out there who will say they’re addicted to coffee and plenty of people would think that’s a legitimate truth because when they don’t have their coffee fix, like me, they get headaches. BUT! This is actually dependence. “Regular coffee drinking results in mild physical dependence but addiction is a pathological and compulsive form of use.” So in short, no. You are not addicted to caffeine but you may be dependent on it! .
.
Interestingly, like with some addictive drugs, caffeine (and other non addictive drugs) can also have reduced effectiveness after prolonged use as we build up tolerance. So if you’re like me and you drink about 3 cups a day, you probably don’t feel the same effects as somebody who only drinks coffee every now and then.
.
.
We can also experience caffeine withdrawals - as I mentioned above, the caffeine withdrawal headache is common for people who miss their daily dose, but apparently only 50% of people who give up their daily caffeine will experience any symptoms of withdrawal so I guess I’m in the unlucky half. .
.
So do you love coffee and do you have withdrawal symptoms if you skip a cup? .
.
Ps. This photo was from years ago please don’t get on me about the paper cup ;)

How to spot bad science 🧫 some general tips for everybody! .
.
▫️Study doesn’t have control groups! In any study, ANY!!!! Controls can make or break an experiment. Correctly controlling your variables is necessary. .
.
▫️ Sensationalized results. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. A great example is a headline like “we found the cure for cancer” - so much wrong with this, it’s never gonna be real.
.
.
▫️ Small sample size with overstating of results. If there’s a study and only 4 people participated and now there saying that X causes Y.... it’s probably wrong. This is a small sample size and not representative of the population as a whole. .
.
▫️ Does it say clinically tested or proven? What does that even mean? I certainly don’t know. .
.
▫️The research can’t be replicated. If the paper is 10 years old and nobody else has been able to show the same result then maybe there’s errors in the methodology. .
.
▫️Lack of replicates for an experiment. If you get a result once, cool, but do it again. You need to show that he result is reproducible over multiple experiments with experimental and technical replicates! .
.
▫️Papers doesn’t actually explain what they have done. I hate when people don’t say what their error bars are, or how they analyzed their western blots and got that statistical significance. Be open and honest about it! .
.
▫️Not Peer reviewed. Some journals do not have rigorous peer review or sometimes any and things slip through the cracks. Even in some of the better journals, mistakes are made. .
.
▫️Made up results. Obviously this is a no no. Please don’t rearrange your western blots or FACS plots to make new ones. .
.
Any other things, comment below and add to this post for people starting out in science or for those who aren’t trained scientists!

The top 3 things I have learned during my PhD journey so far: .
.
#1: Work smarter not harder. For me, working 12+ hour days didn’t work. By being organized and efficient, I could get the same amount of work done in an 8 hour day. It was busy, but effective and I got to have a life outside of my PhD too! .
.
#2: Having a good support network is really important! Learning who the right people to surround myself with was a big game changer for me. I spent a lot of time interacting with people who didn’t make me feel like the best version of myself for a while, but realizing who actually had my back and investing my energy and time into those relationships was one of the best decisions I made. I am now confident that no matter what I am going through there will be people who have my back and will look out for me. .
.
#3: You have to enjoy the process. Some days are going to suck. Maybe even some weeks, months or even years of your PhD will just suck. It happens. But wishing your days away and waking up every day just waiting for the day to be over is not a good way to spend your PhD years. Try and find a way to find a way to enjoy it! My second year was really hard for me and I had to work to find out what it was that I didn’t like, and how I could change my mindset to a more positive one. This is much harder said than done. It probably took me 7 months to work this out. But I’m glad I did. I’m back to a place where I can actually enjoy what I’m doing day to day. Some days I still don’t like it and I want that day to end, but I wake up the next day ready to go again. .
.
.
Do any of these things resonate with you?
What have you learned throughout your PhD or other studies?

I don’t like that people often glorify overwork in academia and make it seem like being chronically stressed in goals HOWEVER, I also don’t like people having a go at others for their work habits ‍️
.
.
While most people are taking 10 days off over the Easter break, I am working every day for the next 2 weeks straight & so I want to talk about work hours. .
.
Personally I am an early bird and I like to start earlier in the day on a normal week and leave by 5pm ⏰- but I also know that some people like to come in at 1pm and stay til midnight and guess what, that is fine too! .
.
I also am not the type of person who usually works on the weekends because that’s my time with my friends, family and partner. I enjoy that time with them and my “me time”. BUT! Sometimes you have to make sacrifices in science and sometimes working a bit extra is necessary. I have A LOT of stuff to do just to prep for experiments and honestly the fewer people there are in the lab the easier for me to get those things done so I’m sacrificing my holiday time to get that done. .
.
This doesn’t make me a harder worker than anybody who is not working over the break! They deserve that time off and I applaud them for enjoying it! I don’t want to make it seem like working 20 days in a row is a good thing - it’s not IMO. But it’s something I have decided to do to put myself in a better position to finish my experiments sooner! 🧬 .
.
So there are 3 things I want people to get from this post:
1) don’t glorify overworking! Me working extra isn’t making me feel any better about myself it’s just something I have decided to do but I will take time off another time.
2) you will probably have to make sacrifices like this from time to time in science because you have a late night, or have to work on the weekend or take time points over night.
3) everybody works at different times and at different paces. Unless you’re truly worries about somebody then don’t shame them for their work hours.

Let’s talk studying and tips and tricks. I have a blog post about my study tips and tricks, which I will link in my story - but I thought I’d post a slightly different version here that relates to any kind of study. .
.
Tip 1: take notes! Seems simple right? But so many people make the mistake of just thinking they can read through something and absorb it all. When taking notes try to write it down in your own words. .
.
Tip 2: flow diagrams and tables are really great ways to organize information. I used tables soooo often when I was studying during undergrad! Great way to summarize. .
.
Tip 3: use system cards or palm cards. I would write a question on one side and the answers on the other. This allows you to test your own knowledge. .
.
Tip 4: use silly ways to memorize things. I remember when I was studying with friends we would come up with all kinds of weird things to remember information. Things like mnemonics for pathways is super helpful! .
.
Ask questions! If you are in a position where there are people who can help you out, go and ask your questions. Sometimes the way that somebody else understands things can help you understand more too! .
.
Tip 4: (not really a tip) but repetition! If you go over it enough, it’ll stick. But the things above can help make that process faster.
.
.
What are your tips for studying? Comment below to help out anybody who may be studying for upcoming tests or exams.

Tissue culture time
Something I do a lot in the lab is work with cell lines. The cell lines I work with are made from cancer cells that have been immortalized and put into culture. .

In the lab we commonly use cell lines because they are like their own little living system bridging the in vivo and in vitro worlds. In the lab I knock out and knock in genes (delete or add) and study what effect that has on the pathway I work on. .

Cell lines are a very useful tool but they can also be frustrating due to the fact you can’t control what they do! Some days they will be overgrown, other days not grown enough and some times you will feel like you need to split them constantly to keep them alive - they’re like little babies in a way! .

But generally they are really useful and there are many types of cell lines, all useful for studying or doing different things in the lab, so thanks, cells!

Ps. No this photo was not taken in the hood. They are glass all around. That would be gross.

Today I am back in the tissue culture hood looking after my cells 🧫! Part of my PhD project involves knocking out and over expressing various proteins in my cells and looking at what changes occur in the signaling pathway I study ‍. The cells I work with are blood cancer cells from mice and they need splitting every 2-3 days . I have 2 different cell lines so the media (like food) they need is different and they grow at different rates so I have to check on them daily. These babies grew up nice and fast after their little holiday in the freezer ️
.
Currently I’m in the process of getting the cells ready to infect with lentivirus 🧬 so I can have a full set of cells for all my experiments this year so wish me luck! 🤞

I love visiting other labs seriously. If I’m going overseas I often take the opportunity to reach out to people I know so I can come for a visit. It’s nice to see what’s happening elsewhere, how other people get things done and make new friends! I’ve been really fortunate to visit some really cool labs and institutes in my time, some of the photos of these places are listed here. I’ve not travelled extensively, but when I have I tried to get some stops in. However not all holidays are for that and some you should just enjoy work free ;) but never feel too shy to reach out to people and ask if you can have a little tour if you’re interested.
