The road less traveled.🇿🇦 In celebration of 25 years of democracy @meetsouthafrica sent five of us teams around the country to document some of their most loved locations. It’s been on a whirlwind week doing everything from paddling up a canyon in Storms River to driving 11 hours across the northern cape to get to the very remote Kgalagdi desert. This one was taken in the Cederberg amongst these rock formations that seemed like giant dinosaurs coming out of the red earth. More to come soon.

@helloemilie 🧡🧡🧡 Will you be there?!

@zachallia 😍

At first I was disappointed when I went back through my photos and saw this. It’s a beautiful sunset but all I could see was the ‘extra’ fat I didn’t want visible in the photo. It wasn’t there a year ago, but lately my health has been taking a back seat to everything else in life. I’m sure many out there can relate. I struggle with figuring out the right diet and exercise routine when I’m working like crazy, and I can love myself and feel beautiful when I’m five pounds thinner but can I love myself however I am today? That’s why I’m not editing out that roll, and not deleting this photo. I’m posting it because self love is what I’m working on the most right now, and this is facing a fear of mine, that I’m not lovable if I’m not skinnier. Or younger-looking, or any of the other things growing up with Barbie, fashion magazines, and Ariel made me aspire to - things we can’t naturally achieve. But I can achieve self-acceptance. That’s my effort today.

Hapuku Lodge in Kaikoura is one of my favorite @luxurylodgesnz and you can probably see why. I’ve stayed here on and off over the past couple of years, and it’s peaceful location just north of Kaikoura with views of both the sea and mountains make my heart sing. Hidden away on a deer farm, @hapukulodge is committed to sustainable and replanting native trees, this eco retreat is one of my favorite places to just hide away in when I need a recharge, especially in one of their luxury tree houses I hadn’t been back to Kaikoura since the earthquakes and this was a great reminder I need to return more often #luxurytreehouse #kaikoura #whencanimoveinplease

The suggestiveness of a silhouette is what makes it my favorite type of photograph. The who, what, where, when and why seem to become less important as we have less to base our judgements on and can truly appreciate the shape & form of the subject. It forces us to invest more time learning about the image to get answers to those questions. .
The viewer is given permission to in some way envision themselves in the picture. That may be perhaps the most powerful aspect of a silhouette.

Today is my birthday and I still can’t get over how incredible this whole journey has been!
A few days ago while I was under the stars in Death Valley National Park I finally realized the one thing I would LOVE for my birthday!

This is not “sponsored” or an “ad”. It’s just my way of trying to give back and help protect the places that have inspired me. I’d be so honored if you could take three minutes to donate $5 (the cost of a cup of coffee) to the National Parks Foundation!
Just click the link in my profile and leave a comment below with a “” emoji if you donate. I’ll be giving an annual National Park Pass to TWO people that have donated!

This is such an easy way to give back and make sure these beautiful places stay protected for us and future generations. Hopefully, these passes give YOU more opportunities to be inspired by our magnificent world!

Thanks again for all of your love and support ️

Southern California doesn’t have the exact same kind of Spring that I experienced living elsewhere in the United States and Europe. So I was glad @dante.vincent was game for a weekend visit to Descanso Gardens which we had previously visited in December for their nighttime light show. It has themed gardens where landscape architecture styles from around the world are on display for residents and visitors who pay the entrance fee. We paid ours in advance online, showed up early and were almost the first to walk in when it opened. I’d advise this if you want to see the gardens with less people. Once we entered, we headed straight for the Japanese-style garden — where I took this photo — that [from @descansogardens website] “blends design elements from four classic garden styles. Cross an arched bridge and walk on shaded paths along a koi-filled stream to the teahouse, designed by architect Whitney Smith and built in 1966. The plants in this garden are all native to Asia, and include camellias, azaleas, mondo grass and Japanese maples. The distinctive roof of the teahouse, crafted from blue tiles imported from Japan, is especially striking in the spring when nearby pink cherry and plum trees are in bloom. The garden includes a minka, modeled after a traditional farmhouse, which was designed by Kenneth Masao Nishimoto and built in 1969.” As we weren’t able to travel to Japan this Spring like we’d hoped to do and since a similar area in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden was always our favorite in New York, this part of Descanso ended up being our favorite at this time of year. It felt the most different from where we live near Runyon Canyon, which is more arid, punctuated by palm trees, cactus and succulents and which doesn’t really have anything blooming except the plants on our balcony. (Not complaining. Just drawing a contrast.) Does this sound like somewhere you’d want to visit when you travel to Los Angeles?

I took some necessary time off to disconnect from social media and find more balance in my life over the last few months. It’s been great for me to reconnect with loved ones, work on the fundamentals of my business, and feel reinspired with the path I have chosen!

CAMEL CROSSING!

Road trips are my favorite way to explore foreign countries. Renting a car and driving yourself allows you the freedom to stop anywhere you please, traveling at your own pace.

We were initially a bit worried about spending 10 days driving in #Morocco, because we heard horror stories about crazy traffic (and drivers). But we gave it a shot anyway, and had an amazing trip!

In my latest blog post, I share tips for renting a car and driving in Morocco — including how to deal with camel traffic jams, and getting stopped by the police. You can find the link in my bio.

In many ways the past few months I’ve been rebuilding my life from the ground up. I’ve had to completely change how I communicate, learn to ask for help, be ok with saying hey, I’m not ok, and figuring out a new way to structure my work and personal life that *actually* is sustainable. Because taking 100 flights a year for work is not sustainable, Liz, nor is working 80 hour weeks and not even having time to just Netflix and nap - my new thing because I’m currently ranking my romantic life at around a 2. Boys couldn’t be the furthest thing from my mind. When you’re an adult, it’s super hard to change old habits and to rewrite your stories, but bit by bit in slowly setting myself up for real success, and building the life I really want (props to miss @adventuresskait for helping - but more on her wizardry soon ). In the meantime I’ve got some very exciting things to announce soon. Namaste from India
I can’t remember when I first started to dream of visiting this country one day. Countless images that I kept watching from renowned photographers. Mesmerizing stories told by travelers from all over the world. I’ve always considered India as the ultimate destination for any travelers, one that will change you forever.
More than a week already that @delphinepolson and I have been traveling around. From the lush greens of Kerala and its peaceful life along the backwaters, to the hectic and colorful streets of Varanasi, India has been nothing but a dream so far. With a billion things happening every second wherever you look at, and a country almost as big as my home continent, it already seems like this trip to India is the first one of a long new series. And I can’t wait to fall in love with it.

I was so very honored and lucky to get to meet some of this season’s baby kākāpō chicks down in Invercargill. Spoiler alert - they are exceptionally cute, awkward and fluffy. I think my heart exploded getting to meet them, and I’m convinced now more than ever we have to keep working hard to protect them! These little guys are the very future of their species, which are highly endangered and with only around 150 birds left, though now there are a record breaking 74 chicks hatched in New Zealand! Fingers crossed most of them make it, and thank you so much to @kakapo_recovery and @docgovtnz for working tirelessly round the clock to protect and support the kākāpō if you’re in Invercargill this weekend, you can meet some of the new chicks (if there are tickets left) but if not perhaps consider adopting a kākāpō or making a donation to these foofy characters #birdnerd #kakapo

Looking back over my photos, I still can’t believe that a place like Catalina Island can be part of LA County but feel so much like the Med which is in fact so far away you can’t just take a boat there from my home in West Hollywood....
.
Seriously, if you’re planning a trip to Southern California but you want something a little different, even though my experience to the island was hosted and of course they want me to tell you to @visitcatalinaisland - I’m telling you because I think you should visit. It’s a fun place that’s very special in ways the mainland just, isn’t.
.
(Not that I haven’t grown to love LA, because I have!) And now that it’s settled you should visit, you have a few options on how to get there. You could be very baller, but maybe not so environmentally-friendly and you could take a helicopter. Or, you could do as we did and take the @catalinaexpress out of Long Beach to Avalon. An upgraded ticket in the Commodore Lounge includes one free Bloody Mary or glass of Champagne and priority boarding. They’re famous for the Bloody Mary in certain circles. And I can attest to it being quite delicious!
.
No matter how you get there, maybe get there this year. This view will greet you as you pull into Avalon’s harbor and what you do from there is up to you. But since it’s the 100th Anniversary of William Wrigley Jr. buying a controlling interest in what is now the Catalina Island Company - there’s more to do this year then there ever has been before. And if they can’t help you enjoy Catalina, there’s always the @catalinachamber & @catalinamuseum plus a very friendly crop of locals who are like islanders the world over, the kind of people you want to sit and have a drink with, full of good stories. There’s just something about Island life! ️

On this day six years ago I walked into my bosses office l, kicked the filing cabinet over, dramatically threw everything off of his desk before jumping on it, shredding all of my meticulously paperclipped files while hollering “fuck you, corporate America! I quit!” before sashaying out the door in the most epic of resignation exits of all time. Ever. Ok not really, but that’s what happened in my head, ok? In reality it took about three tries for me to summon up the courage to resign, before I ran to the bathroom and cried for about 15 minutes 🤗 6 years ago today I took the massive step of putting my dreams and goals ahead of what everyone was telling me I should be doing. I wanted to travel the world, create beautiful stories and inspire people to get out of their comfort zones. But I was $100K deep in student loan debt and everyone told me I was crazy, blogging wasn’t a possible career. But I stubbornly ignored them all, and looked deep within myself to find the courage to just give it a go, see if I could turn my blog into a job. And guess what? I did. I thank my lucky stars everyday for the freedom I found in following my dreams. All it takes is a leap of faith.

Exciting opportunity, guys! This weekend only the incredible @kakapo_recovery team is hosting viewings of this years hand-reared kākāpō chucks in Invercargill from Saturday to Monday (event details can be found on their FB page). With only 147 kākāpō left in the world, and a record breaking 74 chicks born this season (kākāpō don’t breed every year) this is a very big deal and an incredible opportunity to meet the future of this quirky species ️ thanks to the tireless hard work of @kakapo_recovery hopefully we’ll see these night parrots flourish back in our forests one day! I was lucky enough to spend some time with last seasons chicks in 2016 and I can heartily attest to their cuteness.
